Let’s BE HAPPY

Here is an easy tutorial that will teach you a few basic lettering techniques. To complete the tutorial you will need:

• A sheet of paper
• 3 Uni Pin felt-tip pens, 0.3, 0.5 and 0.8 mm tips
• The BE HAPPY template that you can download  here and which will be a visual aid if you have any doubts during any stage of your creation

1st step: First trace two horizontal lines with a pencil. They will help you position the top and bottom of your letters perfectly. Then trace the outlines of the letters, in pencil at first then with the Uni Pin 0.8 mm felt-tip pen, using a ruler. Make sure you space each letter from its neighbour, respecting a regular distance.

2nd step: To create an initial volume effect, add a shadow to your letters by duplicating the external lines to the right and down, as if a light was shining from the top left of your drawing. First use a PIN 0.5mm, then fill in this drawn shadow with the 0.8mm tip.

3rd step: Add relief inside each letter by duplicating its top and left outlines, inside, with the Uni Pin 0.5 mm felt-tip pen.

4th step: To extend the volume effect, with a Uni Pin 0.3 mm felt-tip pen add a hatched drop shadow beneath your letters by tracing parallel lines 1 mm apart towards the bottom right of your sheet.

…and hey presto, you can now admire the result!
